| Like HUMMER, the Jeep brand’s got military roots. Originally the
civilian version of the military Jeep (G.P. or General Purpose vehicle) that became an icon during WWII, the nameplate survived the demise of several manufacturers, passing from owner to owner and becoming more recognized each time. Jeep finally became its own brand in 1963. The uncompromising off-roaders became urban pop-culture icons as well. The current Wrangler is several generations removed from the original CJ, but remains instantly recognizable and is one of the most respected off-road vehicles extant. |

Looking like a seven-eighths scale Cherokee, the Jeep Patriot hits the streets at an uncertain time for SUVs. The full-size Jeep Commander launched into the teeth of rising fuel costs and a shrinking full-size SUV market in 2006, and sales have been less than stellar.
