| The spirit is the same, but these cars actually bear little relationship to the Mini produced by BMC starting in 1959. Under the skin, the resurrected, cheerful MINI is a BMW product, introduced in 2001 after BMW inherited the stillborn Rover project in its purchase of the company. The re-imagined MINI helped to create the “premium compact” segment of stylish, city-friendly and fuel-efficient cars with luxury appointments. This is no crass attempt to capitalize on name recognition, either; though owned by BMW, the MINI got its start as a legitimate Rover project, and the performance versions have the blessing of the John Cooper Works. |

'Let's go,' the MINI says. If you ask it where, it says, 'Wherever.' |
