MITSUBISHI REVIEWS |
| The name translates roughly as “three diamonds,” and Mitsubishi is
unusual in that it’s a small part of a much larger and widespread
conglomeration of companies, all carrying the Mitsubishi name.
Mitsubishi cars have been produced since 1917, but the company that
exists now dates to 1970. The first Mitsubishis came to the U.S. in
1971, as captive imports via Chrysler, badged as Dodge Colts, but in
1982, the first Mitsubishi-badged vehicles appeared on American
shores. The introduction of the hot Eclipse, rally-bred Lancer
Evolution and some prominent product placement in The Fast and The
Furious 2 helped to make Mitsubishi one of the most youth-oriented
car companies in the business. |

Mitsubishi is, to put it kindly, a brand in need of some excitement. The hot-rod Evolution is getting old, and the rest of the lineup consists mainly of well-built but forgettable alternatives to Honda and Toyota products. Even the showcar-inspired Eclipse seems to have fallen off of the ‘that‘s-cool‘ radar after barely a year on the market. It‘s high time for a change. |

Mitsubishi‘s Outlander debuted in 2003 as one of the first small SUVs to lean more toward being a tall station wagon than an off-roader. Honda and Toyota ran with that ball, of course, and the Outlander has often gotten lost in the shuffle. Mitsubishi thinks it‘s time for that to change, and 2007 will see the introduction of a more mature and more refined Outlander to the U.S. |

The Eclipse was the darling of the enthusiast press when it debuted in 1990, with sporty good looks and world-class handling. The aftermarket community warmed to the second-generation car in 1995, and Mitsubishi found itself racking up impressive street cred and sales in quick order. |
